If you have one of these with a CVT and a fart can, you probably don’t want to unnecessarily downshift when in the presence of a correct American V8 with proper exhaust and manual gearbox. It wasn’t even a WRX or an STI. Sad!

A theoretically perfect CVT set for acceleration and paired with a V8 would be pretty great. That is not what was going on here, so much.

Would it also surprise you if I said it happened in Nashville, TN?

STI is manual only.

You are missing the point. A CVT Impreza with a fart can is massive failure.

In more pedantry, what’s the proper term when a CVT grabs a lower ratio? Is it downshifting? I mean, it doesn’t really shift ;-)

Re-ratioing. It’s a term that I’ve literally invented myself right now. This is what happens when a CVT is met with a change in speed, requested throttle, or requested kickdown.
Because that is what it does. Constant re-ratioing.

Down-sad

I like this and will use it going forward.

So, how do you downshift a CVT?

Allow the computer to re-ratio it, or use the preset ratios if they stupidly put flappy paddles on the steering wheel.
Discussion was elsewhere here. It’s still sad.

CVT base-spec Impreza with boy-racer mods? That’s sad alright. :/
Here’s hoping Subaru get it right next time.
